Care for De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis
Pain near the base of your thumb can make simple daily tasks—like texting, gaming or lifting your baby difficult. If that discomfort feels sharp, tender, or restricted when you move your thumb or wrist, you may be dealing with a condition called De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis (DQT). This increasingly common condition, often called “Mommy Thumb” or “Gamer’s Thumb,” responds well to chiropractic care.
Understanding the Root of the Problem
Two specific tendons run from your forearm into your thumb: the Extensor Pollicis Brevis (EPB) and the Abductor Pollicis Longus (APL). Their job is to pull the thumb away from your hand—movements we use constantly throughout the day.
With DQT, the sheath that protects and guides these tendons becomes inflamed. This inflammation makes it harder for the tendons to glide smoothly, which can lead to pain, swelling, or even a catching sensation during movement.
Common signs include:
- Pain at the base of the thumb or along the wrist
- Swelling or tenderness over the affected area
- Difficulty gripping or pinching
- Sharp pain when lifting objects or using your phone
How It Happens
De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis is often linked to overuse or repetitive thumb movements. We commonly see it in new parents, tech users, and anyone who frequently lifts, grips, or texts.
Triggers can include:
- Repetitive lifting (especially infants or groceries)
- Extended smartphone or gaming use
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy
- Direct trauma to the thumb or wrist
- Age group most affected: 30 to 50 years
