Swimmer’s shoulder is a common overuse injury that affects not only swimmers but also athletes who engage in repetitive overhead motions, such as tennis players and weightlifters. This condition develops when excessive strain on the shoulder joint leads to pain, weakness, and restricted movement.

Even those who perform repetitive tasks at work may experience swimmer’s shoulder. Jobs that involve frequent overhead motions—such as painting, stocking shelves, or manual labor—can contribute to this condition. Extended computer use and repetitive lifting in healthcare professions may also play a role.

Understanding Swimmer’s Shoulder

So, what exactly causes it? Typically, impingement causes swimmer’s shoulder. This happens when the rotator cuff tendon gets pinched between two bones in the shoulder, leading to inflammation, pain, and sometimes even tendon damage.

A key sign of swimmer’s shoulder is discomfort when lifting your arm, particularly to the side. Some people feel a sharp pain that fades as the arm moves past a certain point—known as an arc of pain. Others might find it challenging to lift their arm at all, but a healthcare practitioner may be able to move it without causing pain. However, if both you and your doctor struggle to move the shoulder, frozen shoulder could be the real culprit.

Because other conditions, like rotator cuff strains and labrum tears, can mimic these symptoms, getting an accurate diagnosis is crucial.
